Wednesday morning was delightful. The 1.002 ft. aircraft carrier USS Midway collided with the merchant ship Cactus in Far Eastern waters Tuesday, killing two U. S. sailors and injuring 3 others, a Navy spokesman said. The 64,000-ton Midway was enroute to Singapore. The cause of the collision had not been determined Vandals were at work on Tryon Peak over the weekend. If anyone can be of help to the Sheriff's Dept as to who might have been on the mountain destroying property call 894-8244. The vandals damaged WFBC-TV translator, cut wires and damag ed Channel 56 (educational TV) and stole a repeater that belonged to Ansel’s Refrigerator Co. of Asheville The vandals also tore down the cross on the tower that the Columbus Lions Club lights every Christmas and Easter. The Sheriff's Dept arrested a man early Wednesday morning in the Peniel Section and have him charged with burglary. He was discovered in the house by the wife who screamed Her Continued On Back Page Giant Tree Hits House A giant oak tree covered with ivy, fell on the roof of the Pruette home on Markham Road, Tryon about 2:15 Sunday morning. Mrs. Tandy Pruette, her daughter, Miss Pat Pruette and her grandson, Cappy Pruette were awakened by the loud noise and parts of the ceiling falling. Miss Pat Pruette got her nephew, Cappy, out of his room just before a big limb came through and hit the bed It took a crane to remove the tree. The tree and limbs were so heavy that they had to be cut into smaller pieces so they could be removed by the crane. Fortunately no one was injured in the mishap, but everyone concerned was shaken up Died Tuesday McFarland Inducted Into Law Fraternity William McFarland, Jr. of Co lumbus has been inducted into the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity at Campbell Univer sity School of Law. McFarland is a second year law student al Campbell. Delta Theta Phi Law Fratern ity is an international profession al law fraternity. Founded in 1900, it is one of the three leading law fraternities, with a member ship of nearly 70,000 lawyers The Campbell chapter was establish ed in 1978. Membership is open to all students in good academic standing who have been enrolled Continued On Back Page Nelson Jackson Nelson Jackson, 94, of Erskine Road, Tryon died Tuesday afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was the son of the late John Nelson Jackson and Martha Ellen Hunter Jackson. He was a graduate of Baylor Prep School and the University of Virginia where he was a member of the basketball team. He was a captain in the U. S. Army during World War I. Mr. Jackson first visited Tryon in 1904 and moved here in 1913 when he and his father started Cloth of Gold Fine Fabrics under the name of Jackson & Jackson, Inc. In 1917 he married Laura Foster Chapman of Spartanburg and they have made their home here since that time. He had a part in helping form many of the organizations that Continued On Back Page Pirmasens Family Here Saturday For five years the Tryon Rotary Club and the Pirmasens (Germany) Rotary Club have exchanged youths for a month each summer. Miss Rita Panoscha of Tryon has just returned from a month in Pirmasens, Germany. On Saturday, August 2nd the Erhard Servas family of Pirma sens will arrive here. Mr. Servas is president of Schuh-Union AG manufacture of ladies and men’s shoes with factories in Germany, Switzerland and France.
